What did you do while you are in Kenya?

We were part of a Christian ministry group called SOMA Canada, in this case ministering to women survivors of the Rwandan genocide. Wanjiku Kironyo is a member of this team as well and each year when we travel to Rwanda she asks us to visit the projects and schools and to share with the children and students. This visit took us to Upper Matsia and Kisarian Farm. Unfortunately due to impromptu road blocks on the to the farm we arrive too late to see the students.

What inspired you on the trip?

Each year we visit the schools is a special time. The secondary school students presented us with a drama, recitations and demonstration of martial arts. It only took a moment to realize we were watching people who were very accomplished, some of which came from talent but much of which came from study and practice. It would be easy to imagine 'the old man' in particular being a professional actor in the future. The subject of the play was quite startling us, as it usually is, because we do not deal openly with problems of family violence and deception. Eacch of our team was given a chance to share with the students and Head Master Mr F.Mustiso said we would pray with any students who wished prayer. To our surprise three older young men came forward to share their concerns with God and us.

We were able to have lunch with and say hello to our old friends Nathan and Susan - a special part of each visit to Africa for us. The students danced and sang a song which invlolved the students calling teachers up to join the dancing. A bit humbling because we do not know how to dance, period! Again we shared with students, trying to impress on them that were created by God and that He loved them very much. The grande finali was watching the sports competitions, with the teachers participating along with their students.

What information did you receive that was helpful in preparing you for the trip?

We have visited the projects quite often and were updated by Wacera enroute.

What information didn't you get that could have been helpful?

We recieved everything we needed.

Any personal anecdotes or  additional comments?

Just thanks God for His support and guidance for Maji Mazuri the staff and all the supporters who make the opportunities available to these children. Where would they be otherwise? The need is very, very great and Maji Mazuri  is filling a huge part of that need.

Would you consider returning?

Yes
