Better news from the Mathare Valley Slums in Nairobi, Kenya.

November 16, 2006
Tragedy Strikes in the Mathare Valley – several killed, many injured, 100s are homeless. Maji Mazuri USA launches an appeal for an Emergency Relief Fund.

August 14, 2006
Our sponsorship program continues to grow, but so, too, does the list of children that need sponsors!

Our Head Start program in the Mathare Valley slum district of Nairobi has expanded by 50% as we have added a third class to the school, and we have created the Maji Mazuri Teenz group.

In the Mathare Valley, the Youth Group has opened its new office and is installing a cyber café.

The Children’s Center is now caring for 49 disadvantaged children; and we have added a third floor to the building.

Enrollment at our school in Kiserian has increased considerably – to over 110 children, and we are presently building a dormitory on top of the new kitchen/dining structure.

The farm at Kiserian has added more acres of irrigated cultivation.

The primary (elementary) school at Upper Matasia now has over 90 children, and the secondary (high) school, which has expanded to include Grade 11, has 80!

There has been a constant stream of international volunteers working with the Maji Mazuri team.

There have been mission visits from two Atlanta area churches – Mount Pisgah United Methodist and St. Luke’s Presbyterian – and from Canada, Norway and the Netherlands.

We now have 93 children sponsored, and have expanded the program considerably.

We have established a new fund – The Children’s Fund – for people to make donations that can be used for any child in our care that has a special need.

The farm at Kiserian has yielded its first crops – vegetables for the children, and tomatoes for sale locally.

An Atlanta firm has donated $5,000 towards completing the kitchen dining room complex at the Kiserian elementary school.

A group from one of our sponsor churches in Atlanta visited Kenya in October to see the projects for themselves.

Supporters in Alberta Canada have raised over $6,750 Canadian at a church tea and bake and craft sale.

The Youth Group has obtained a safe space for an office and internet café.

And a Dutch charity has made a substantial donation to the Youth Group’s Education Fund.

Below is a brief description of Maji Mazuri Center's current projects.  For more detailed information, please visit the individual links.

Maji Mazuri Children's Home and Emergency Center

At Maji Mazuri Center's Childrens' Home, disabled children are rehabilitated and given  a chance at a productive life. An assessment test is arranged and based on the results, a long-term plan is prepared.  Children are either moved to long term treatment centers or special schools for the physically disabled.

The Maji Mazuri Center's Children's Home cares for 40 abandoned children, many of whom are physically or mentally handicapped. They receive 24-hour care, rehabilitation, medical services and specialized education. There is a long waiting list of children needing these services in the community. For more information about the Children's Home and Emergency Shelter, please click here.

Mathare Youth Group

Maji Mazuri Center works with young people and children in and around Nairobi. These young people benefit from life skills training and other programs we have. This is an opportunity to develop initiative, leadership and vision for the future. They develop valuable skills, as well as self-respect, co-operation, a deeper insight into themselves and the world in which they are growing. These young people are transforming their own lives and turning to help others in their community. The programs that are run include courses on: Youth and HIV/AIDS, Youth and Careers, Youth and Reproductive Health Issues.  To find out more information, please click here.

Mavuno Micro Enterprise Project

The Mavuno Micro Enterprise Project was created to give individuals who had the desire to break free of the bonds of poverty, but lacked the means to do so.  It is a cooperative of entrepreneurs, who through a self replenishing fund are able to take small loans and start a business.  The group holds meetings and share their business experiences.  Each member of the group are able to provide each other with support and act as a sounding board for ideas on how to improve their businesses.  As the individuals find success, they pay back their loans and are able to take loans from the fund in higher amounts.  In this way, the fund is continuously replenished by its own successes.  For more information on this project, click here.

Maji Mazuri Headstart Project

The Headstart Project serves dual purposes of providing children with an beginning education and a self environment in which to stay while their parents are working.  It primarily serves those individuals involved with the Micro Enterprise project, who would otherwise be forced to leave their children at home unattended.  For more information about the Headstart project, please click here.

Kiserian Farm Project

Maji Mazuri has acquired 25 acres of farm land. Farming activities have been slow to start, due to a lack of water, but we have drilled a borehole at a cost of $45,000. The farming project is an ambitious one which will include: training in agricultural skills; a demonstration farm; youth camping; a resource center and commercial farming.  For more information on this wonderful project, please click here.

Kiserian School

The Kiserian School is located near the Kiserian Farm Project.  The school serves many of the Masai children in the area, including young girls who to this point had not had the opportunities to better themselves.  For more information about the school, please click here.
