Mavuno Report January to July 2011

In April of this year, Mavuno Microfinance hosted Jitegemee, an Organization from Machakos that works with street children. Jitegemee provides vocational training and issues them soft loans to start out their businesses.

In a four day Microfinance Networking Workshop both organizations shared and learnt new ideas in the operations of Microfinance. On the last day of the workshop, both organizations visited with Jamii Bora, a Microfinance which is well known in Kenya.

This Networking workshop was funded by the Oswald Family foundation, which has been supporting both organizations. This workshop was facilitated by Crosscurrents International.

A team of system developers have been working at the design and implementation of systems to automate record keeping at each project. In Mavuno Microfinance, the system records loan disbursements, information of members and all details regarding hat loan, including the repayment progress.

The system also gives a summary of Mavuno’s progress in terms of income and loan disbursements. The micro finance program is currently preparing for its annual general meeting, the main aim being having old successful Mavuno members start mentoring the new members, communicate Mavuno’s long term strategic plan and create a sense of family in the group.

The micro finance program is also in a phase where members from the Mavuno youth are graduating to the main microfinance group, as a way of growth and this step will be celebrated by the members as the organization as it’s a major achievement.

The Mavuno Youth preparatory phase completed successfully with Siafu group on 26th June with 10 young men from the river side who were brewing illegal alcohol and have now started small legal businesses. The group has been meeting every Sunday morning for one hour for the past four months.

There has been several stages of counseling and training in this Mavuno preparatory phase.

  • Drug abuse
  • Counseling
  • Peer mentoring
  • Thinking errors, stereotypes and their influence
  • How to start small businesses
  • How to make a strong group
  • Business proposal writing

The above training qualified them to get the small loan of 500/= . The soft loan will be repaid within 10 weeks and at the same time they will be saving 50/= to show their commitment , the saving will enable them to move to the next level which is Mavuno Microfinance.
