In 2008, John’s parents learnt of Maji Mazuri Children’s Centre through a friend and they brought him there. Looking at his admission forms, there was a lot of things he couldn’t do. He was put on a wheelchair. Right now I think of it and remember there is one thing he could do very well, effortlessly, he could smile. John had this radiance and a sparkle in his eyes that said, I am not really okay but I will be, and even if I won’t be, I will still smile.
And that smile has carried him through therapy sessions and training on activities of daily living.
Two years later, his is a different story... His sitting position has greatly improved, his hands have gained motor skills whereby he can now hold crayons and color pictures really well. He is able to feed himself comfortably .. and this year, he has started walking, yes, walking using rails support . Looking at him, it is a definite yes that someday, he will walk even without the support of side rails.
