Due to constant harassment from the City Council, who were kicking vendors out of the city, Sarah and Damaris did not have regular customers and were not making ends meet. After numerous sessions with the credit officer, they applied for their first loan of Kshs. 3,000 (which is about $30).

From this amount they ventured into businesses that have grown over the years. Theirs is a different story now, Sarah has established herself as a business woman, where she owns a successful salon business that employs two ladies. Damaris supplies baby diapers to leading supermarkets in Nairobi and is doing well.

From the joy on their faces, to their cheerful laughter, one can tell that even though their journey was not an easy one, it has borne fruit. Right where they were sitting that day at the Maji Mazuri office, was a wall hanging, titled Life is a Journey, which partly reads: I Live each as fully and confidently as I can, and let God take care of the rest…
