Microfinance Success Stories

Sarah and Damaris

During a recent visit to Mathare, Sarah and Damaris asked if we could share their story. This story began in 2007 when the two sisters walked into the Mathare Maji Mazuri Mavuno Self Helf Group (Microfinance) office, seeking assistance. At that time they were street vendors and were not doing well.

Due to constant harassment from the City Council, who were kicking vendors out of the city, Sarah and Damaris did not have regular customers and were not making ends meet. After numerous sessions with the credit officer, they applied for their first loan of Kshs. 3,000 (which is about $30).

From this amount they ventured into businesses that have grown over the years. Theirs is a different story now, Sarah has established herself as a business woman, where she owns a successful salon business that employs two ladies. Damaris supplies baby diapers to leading supermarkets in Nairobi and is doing well.

From the joy on their faces, to their cheerful laughter, one can tell that even though their journey was not an easy one, it has borne fruit. Right where they were sitting that day at the Maji Mazuri office, was a wall hanging, titled Life is a Journey, which partly reads: I Live each as fully and confidently as I can, and let God take care of the rest…

Janet Kabue

Janet Kabue joined the Organization in 2006  as an Administrative Assistant at the Maji Mazuri Centre International Head Office. Since then, she has been working with the Head Office team to facilitate the smooth running of the Organization. Her duties then included keeping and updating Project inventories, assisting the Program Director and Project Coordinator, processing reports and  supervising the Maji Mazuri Reporters Network. Janet’s passion for children and community work has driven her to get more involved with the Talent program, where she is now the Mathare Maji Mazuri Projects Manager, leading a team of 4 Project Heads. Her background knowledge in Business Information Technology provides the needed insights into the projects.
