A Classical Music Concert in Kasarani - Within Your Capacity

Special needs children benefit from music therapy.

Research documents that many children with special needs exhibit a high level of preference for music and show processing capabilities for musical stimuli that support deficits in related non-music areas. In this way, music can be used as a motivator and alternate learning avenue for select skills that may be more difficult for an individual to achieve using typical non-music instructional approaches.

The children at Maji Mazuri Children’s Centre in Kasarani had a  guest on Saturday, 21st  January.

Mr. Koen, who has great interest in classical music is organizing a charity concert at his home here in Nairobi,  with an aim of raising funds to have some renovations work done at the Centre.

Mr. Koen, who works for United Nations in Nairobi will, with the assistance of Maji Mazuri staff and Mr. Aziz, a volunteer from Holland, plan this grand event and invite his colleagues, charging a fee of between 10 to 15 dollars.

The theme of the Concert is “Within your capacity” whose aim is to encourage the children, that despite their challenges, there is something that they are able to do. As the plans roll out, we hope to involve children from Maji Mazuri in Mathare, who have talents in music and dance.

The funds that will be raised by this event will also go towards buying a percussion set at the centre, and Mr. Koen plans to use music therapy with the children at the centre.

We are very grateful to Mr. Aziz and his wife Annaliz for introducing Mr. Koen to Maji Mazuri and for having the needs of the children at heart. We look forward to the Concert.
