Through the amazing effort of many people locally, and around the world including the Rotary club and Crosscurrents International, Kiserian has become a thriving community that has the potential to be a global icon.
With the self-sustaing set up Kiserian serves as an education facility, a clinic, farm and retreat center for youth in Mathare Valley where 1 in 3 young men in Mathare Valley die of a bullet by age 24. Many are recruited into a life of crime, drugs and certain death because there is no alternative source of income, or information. Some boys become drug runners at age of 5 and girls end up in prostitution at age of 9, because there is no food at home.
In addition to producing a range of vegetables, fruit and farm produce for consumption by the children, teachers and staff at Maji Mazuri the farm has great potential to make a major impact by:
- providing much needed water- at a modest fee- to the local Masai community whose cattle herds are often threatened by severe draught.
- Serving as a training center for different groups of people from the local community, Mathare and beyond. Plus, with such proximity to Wilson airport, one of Africa's main regional airports, this location could serve as continental hub for learning and reflection.
- Providing a facility for agri-business training for those graduates of the primary school not going on to secondary school, for some of the youth in the youth group and for members of the local community.
- Generating substantial income from the sale of cash crops in both the domestic and export markets
