Calabasas resident helping disabled children in Kenya
The Mathare Valley slums near Nairobi, Kenya are a far cry from the chic suburbs of Calabasas. But for Julia Fingleson, 24, the impoverished region is filled with potential and rewards.
“You see more people smiling and laughing here than you do in the U.S. I don’t know why that is, but it’s something I want to know,” said the 2005 Calabasas High School graduate who is working with the nonprofit organization Maji Mazuri to improve the lives of disabled children in East Africa.
Fingleson has been in Kenya since May. She said she will return home in early August with a deepened sense of appreciation. She was interviewed via Skype and email.
