Duara Foundation

Duara supports local and international organizations in poor urban slum communities in sub-Sahara Africa. The board members of Duara have been involved with the projects of Maji Mazuri since 1989.

As a foundation Duara proposes a more dynamic and reciprocal form of international development cooperation and through this it hopes to contribute to a more equal world. Duara supports local and international organizations in poor urban slum communities in sub-Sahara Africa.

The board members of Duara have been involved with the projects of Maji Mazuri since 1989. The long-term relationship between Maji Mazuri and Duara has resulted in a strong commitment of the board members to Maji Mazuri. Each year board members travel at their own expense to work in Kenya.

Vision

Based on its long-term experience Duara has developed a unique vision on development cooperation. Duara define sits position in relation to the projects it works together with in terms of personal friendship, equality and reciprocity. Duara aims to stimulate local knowledge, initiatives and notions of ownership of ones own development. Duara considers this approach as the key to self-sustainability and long-term development.

Duara distinguishes itself from other organization by its long-tem personal commitment to the projects it seeks to work together with and by working in the projects on a voluntarily basis at least once a year. Duara members travel and work in Kenya at their own costs.

History

Following more than a decade of working together with the Maji Mazuri Centre in Kenya as an informal organization Duara was officially registered as a foundation on 24 December 2003. It was 1989 when Naomi van Stapele and her twin brother Saul first met Mrs. Wanjiku Kironyo in The Netherlands. Mrs. Wanjiku Kironyo, director of Maji Mazuri, and 6 of her pupils from a youth group in Mathare Valley, a slum in Nairobi, were invited to the Netherlands to join a conference on alternative didactic methodologies. Part of their contribution to the conference was a drama performance about their lives and dealing with trauma's in the slums of Mathare Valley. The next year, 1990, the twins visited their new friends in Kenya. This was the start of a friendship and working relationship that now already has been going on for 18 years.

Ghetto Radio

Written by Majimazuri Team

Through the initiative of Duara and the youth group, Maji Mazuri wants to launch the first community radio station in Mathare Valley. ‘Mathare FM’ will give people in this ghetto the information, the education and the tools to promote peace, gain access to jobs, funding and other economic and social empowerment opportunities and create unity in the community of 11 ghetto villages that comprise Mathare Valley.

In the run-up to, during and in the aftermath of the 2007 General Elections it were mainly, so called, ‘idle’ youth in the Mathare Valley ghetto who were mobilised in political violence. The best way to promote peace now and in the near future is to base peace promotion strategies on their experiences and frame of reference, involve them in the implementation of such interventions and provide them with jobs and other social and economic opportunities that will give them hope. The community radio station will target the most vulnerable youth in this ghetto to help them access jobs and other opportunities.

For the detailed proposal of Mathare Ghetto Radio open this proposal: Mathare FM.
