Community Development

CommunityDevelopment

From the Onset, Maji Mazuri has made community development a priority, seeking to empower people with the skills they need to affect change in their own lives, in their families and ultimately in the community. The goal of Maji Mazuri has always been to provide basic tools and critical assistance to help people improve their lives in a meaningful way and end the cycle of poverty.

In order to create a self-sustaining solution in terms of social, economic and spiritual well-being, Wanjiku realized a holistic approach was needed and the solution involved working within the community. The community center, Kiserian project and Stop the Bullet! Peace Initiative by the youth will be pillars in this endeavor.

The Maji Mazuri programs have evolved out of the core foundational mission to develop support systems around individuals and each project seeks to address the root causes of poverty.

Positive or poor behavioral choices are often a direct result of our environment. Therefore Maji Mazuri has sought to empower people to implement  system wide changes as this is the only hope for ending the cycle. Each of Maji Mazuri’s projects is designed with the principle of a comprehensive, community-based approach to addressing socio-economic inadequacies.

The projects range from providing training for residents of the community, education, talent development and support to children, to training youth and having them spread the word in the community. The community outreach programs they conduct include counseling and conflict resolution, HIV/AIDS awareness, educational drama, group discussions, exchange programs, micro loans and community service projects. These dynamic youth have become leaders in the community.

Knowledge, awareness and support systems serve as a catalyst and we hope we will reach thousands more in in our quest to bring more transformational opportunities to those in the impoverished slums of Mathare Valley and beyond.
